While this is the last one of our 5 non-negotiables, it’s now our most important NN. Why? Because it’s easy to fail at this. We don’t always make the time that we should for our family because it can be all work, work, work, and no play. Family and friends’ time don’t feature as much as they should.
The juggle is real, and the accompanying struggles are amplified when events outside of our control happen. Working from home often means working longer hours and well into the night.
How do we fix that? Here are a few ideas:
- Start later. I’ve never cared for the 9-5 hustle at the best of times, and if you’re like me and don’t mind burning the midnight oil. Clock in at 10am or 11am if you can! Spend the earlier hours with the family.
- Take the time to document the new routine. Making lists and blocking out time to do things can make the world of difference by establishing healthy boundaries.
- Mix it up even further by working a few hours on the weekend while the kids are out for a walk, asleep, or watching a movie. Then, take a day or two off work midweek to prioritise homeschooling or just being present, and not in work mode. I appreciate this doesn’t work for everyone but if you’re not a boss girl like me, chat to your boss about your options.
